About Stair Railings

Stair Railings in Portland, OR

The staircase is the first thing anyone sees from a Portland entry, and the railing is the part of it they actually touch. We design, fabricate, and install custom stair railings across the city in metal, glass, and cable, modern and ornamental.

Every railing is measured flight by flight and built in our own shop, which matters here more than most places: Portland stairs range from 1912 originals that settled decades ago to open-riser runs in new infill builds, and almost none of them measure like a catalog assumes.

We build guard runs, handrails, landings, and full balustrades, indoors and on outdoor entry steps.

What We Build

Stair Railing Materials

Metal, glass, and cable each behave differently on a staircase. Here is how they compare for Portland homes.

Metal Stair Railings

The most requested and the most flexible. Black steel suits nearly any Portland stair, from slim modern balusters to hand-worked ornamental iron for a historic home. It handles curves and tight switchbacks better than any other material.

Glass stair railing with black posts and wood handrail in Portland, OR

Glass Stair Railings

The choice when a stair sits in a dark stairwell or faces a window. Panels keep the flight visually weightless and let daylight travel between floors, framed with a top rail or frameless for the cleanest run.

Cable Stair Railings

The open middle ground. Thin horizontal cable between metal posts keeps a stair light without the cost of glass, and a wood top rail gives a warm handhold on the climb.

Why the Railing Matters

A Staircase Is Not a Straight Line

Stock railing systems assume a uniform rise and run on a straight flight. Portland stairs rarely oblige. Treads settle in older homes, landings turn mid-flight, and curved runs in Northwest conversions follow no standard radius at all. A railing cut to the stair as it actually sits looks deliberate; one trimmed to fit does not.

The stair also decides the material. A tight switchback wants slim balusters that do not crowd the tread; an open-riser flight wants something that will not visually block the treads. We work that out at the measure visit before anything gets drawn.

Local Experts

Stair Railings Across Portland

In Irvington, Alameda, Laurelhurst, and Eastmoreland, most of the work is replacing failing balustrades on original stairs with new ornamental iron matched to the house. In the Pearl District and Central Eastside, lofts and condos take glass and slim steel on open runs.

Around Sellwood, Hawthorne, and Alberta, remodels swap dated oak balusters for modern metal and cable, and in the West Hills the tall multi-level stairwells call for railings that carry a long run cleanly.

Two Directions

Two Directions for a Portland Stair Railing

Most stair projects land in one of these two camps. Both come out of the same shop, built to the flight we measured.

Modern Stair Railings

Modern leads in Portland’s remodels and new builds. Slim black balusters, glass panels, or tight cable under a clean handrail, so the staircase reads light and the treads carry the eye. It suits open floor plans especially well.

Ornamental Stair Railings

Ornamental belongs on the historic eastside. Scrollwork, forged pickets, and curved balustrade work matched to a home’s era, so a 1912 staircase gets a railing that looks like it always had one.

Frequently Asked Questions

The whole metro and beyond, from the inner neighborhoods out to Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Happy Valley, and across the river to Vancouver.

Glass and cable both work well, since neither blocks the gap between treads that makes the stair look floating. Slim metal balusters are the third option when you want a stronger vertical line.

No. Treads, stringers, and the structure stay put. We remove the old railing and install the new one on the existing stair, which is why a railing swap changes the look of the entry without a full staircase remodel.

Yes. We reproduce picket profiles, newel details, and finishes so a new balustrade reads as original rather than added on. It is regular work in Irvington, Laurelhurst, and the other historic eastside neighborhoods.

Yes, and it is common work here. Curved runs and switchbacks are exactly where a stock system fails, because the geometry never matches a standard part. We measure the flight as built and fabricate the railing to that radius or turn.
