Why Portland Picks Us
Exterior Railings Made for How Portland Lives Outside
Portland spends more of the year outdoors than the forecast suggests, on covered porches in Irvington and Alberta, backyard decks in Sellwood and Montavilla, and condo balconies in the Pearl and South Waterfront. Every one of those spaces depends on its railing, for safety, for looks, and for surviving the rain.
We build exterior railings the same way we build everything: measured at your home, drawn for the space, fabricated in our own shop, and installed by our own crew. Outdoors that control matters twice, because the fit has to be right and the finish has to stand up to a Portland winter.
Porch balustrades with period character, black steel for a remodeled deck, glass or cable where there is a view to keep. We build the version your house calls for.
What We Build
Deck, Porch & Balcony Railings for Portland
Metal, glass, and cable each earn their place outdoors in a different way. Here is how the three tend to land across Portland’s porches, decks, and balconies.
Metal Railings
On Portland porches and stoops, metal has to carry character and shrug off the rain at the same time. Metal is the most requested exterior railing we build, and black powder-coated steel is the usual pick for decks, balconies, and outdoor stairs. Where standing moisture is a concern, aluminum is the smart alternative because it will not rust. Every piece is fabricated in our own shop and finished for year-round weather.
Glass Railings
West Hills decks and South Waterfront balconies are where glass earns its Portland keep. Framed, semi-frameless, or frameless, tempered glass keeps a deck or balcony open to the view. The panels take the weather while the sightline stays clear, and a metal or wood top rail finishes the system so it feels built for the house.
Cable Railings
Cable fits Portland’s backyard deck culture: open, unfussy, and easy to live around. Stainless cables run between metal posts and all but disappear against a view, which is why cable is a deck favorite. It is open like glass, warmer in feel, and comfortable in the weather. A wood top rail ties it into the decking. A steel one keeps it sharp.
Local Experts
Porches, Decks & Balconies Across Portland
In the historic eastside, in Irvington, Alameda, Sabin, and Laurelhurst, much of our exterior work is porch railings: repairing, reproducing, or reimagining the balustrades these homes were built with. Out in Sellwood, Montavilla, and Woodstock, backyard decks drive the demand, usually in steel, cable, or wood-and-metal combinations.
In the West Hills and along the bluffs of Willamette Heights, elevated decks face the city and the mountains, which is glass and cable territory. Downtown, the Pearl and South Waterfront add balcony work on condos, and front-step handrails keep us busy everywhere in between.

Local Conditions
Built for Nine Months of Portland Rain
Portland weather is the first design constraint on any exterior railing. Months of damp will find a weak finish, so we build in powder-coated steel, use aluminum where rust is a real concern, and seal the connections so water cannot sit in the joints. That is the difference between a railing that fades in a few winters and one that does not.
The second constraint is the housing itself. A 1912 porch, a mid-century patio, and a new-build roof deck all take different railings, and Portland has all three on the same block. Fabricating each railing to the property, rather than trimming a kit, is how we cover that range.
Styles
Craftsman Character or Clean Modern Lines
Portland exterior work splits between period porch detail and crisp modern systems for decks and balconies. Both come out of the same shop, finished for the same weather.
Modern Railings
For Portland decks and balconies, modern means slim, black, and quiet about it. A modern exterior railing keeps its lines simple and its presence quiet: slim black metal, clear glass, or tight cable runs, finished for the outdoors. On decks and balconies the effect is the same: the architecture and the view stay in charge.
Ornamental Railings
On the historic eastside, a porch railing should look like it came with the house. Ornamental exterior work brings character to a porch, entry, or balcony. Scrolls, decorative pickets, and custom patterns make the railing part of the home’s face, and finished properly for the outdoors, the detail lasts. We can match an existing design or draw something new.

Exterior Railing Questions from Portland
Which areas around Portland do you cover for exterior work?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-07-31T12:38:39-07:00The whole metro. Lake Oswego, Beaverton, Happy Valley, Vancouver, and everywhere between are in our regular rotation, with every railing fabricated in our own shop.
Do you build railings for decks, balconies, and front steps?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-07-31T12:38:11-07:00All three, plus exterior stairs and patios. Decks and porches make up most of the Portland work, with balcony railings concentrated in the Pearl, South Waterfront, and the newer infill neighborhoods.
What exterior railing material holds up best in Portland weather?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-07-31T12:37:49-07:00Powder-coated steel is the workhorse: strong, versatile, and durable through wet winters when it is finished properly. Aluminum is the right call where rust is a concern, and tempered glass and stainless cable both do well outdoors here. We help you weigh the options for your specific spot.
Can you reproduce the porch railing on our older Portland home?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-07-31T12:37:24-07:00Yes. Porch balustrades on Craftsman and Foursquare homes are steady work for us. We match the picket profiles, proportions, and finish of the original design, and where the old railing is beyond saving, we build a new one that reads as period-correct rather than replacement.
