About Cable Railings
Cable Railings in Lake Oswego, OR
Lake Oswego is glass country on the water, but away from the shoreline cable does a great deal of the work. On hillside decks in Forest Highlands and Mountain Park, thin stainless runs keep a deck open to the tree canopy without the cost or the reflections of a full glass system.
We design, fabricate, and install cable railings across the city for decks, stairs, balconies, and loft edges. Posts and top rails are built in our own shop and the cable is tensioned on site.
It is also the most common answer we give to a specific Lake Oswego question: how do we modernize a dated 1980s railing without changing everything else about the house?
Custom Cable Railings
Custom Cable Railings for Lake Oswego Homes
The hillside lots here almost never give us a straight rectangular deck. Runs step with the slope, turn at corners drawn for the view, and meet stairs at angles the original builder chose for the terrain. Post placement has to follow that geometry, because every post is a visible break in the horizontal line.
Sometimes custom just means correct post spacing, a top rail that ties into the decking, and cable tensioned to stay crisp. On larger commissions it means drawings, custom post finishes, and matching the metalwork to what is already on the property. Either way it starts with a free quote and a measure visit.

Interior Cable Railings in Lake Oswego
Inside, cable is the practical modernizer. Swapping a heavy oak balustrade for cable with a wood top rail lightens a stair completely while keeping the warmth that suits a Lake Oswego interior.
In the open-plan remodels around Mountain Park and Westlake, cable on a loft edge keeps the upper level connected to the great room. Where the stair faces the water, glass usually wins instead, and we will say so.
Where We Work
From the Hillsides to the Lake
Forest Highlands, Palisades, and Uplands bring the wooded hillside decks where cable does its best local work. Mountain Park and Westlake keep a steady flow of 1980s and 90s remodels, indoors and out, trading dated railings for cable.
Closer to the water, along North Shore, Lakewood Bay, and Blue Heron, glass usually takes the primary view elevations while cable handles side decks, stairs, and garden runs. First Addition and Lake Grove mix both.

Exterior Cable Railings in Lake Oswego
On a wooded hillside deck, cable is often the better choice over glass: it keeps the trees in view, does not show water spots after a wet week, and asks almost nothing of you.
Near the lake, moisture is constant, which makes stainless cable and a properly finished frame worth specifying carefully. Done right, an exterior run holds its line and its finish for years.
Options
Wood Cap or All Metal in Lake Oswego
Around the lake this choice usually follows the interior. Warm finishes ask for wood; contemporary remodels often prefer metal throughout.
Cable with a Wood Top Rail
For Lake Oswego interiors with wood floors and warm finishes, the cap is what ties the railing in. Putting a wood top rail over cable gives you the modern horizontal lines without the interior feeling cold. It is the standard choice on family stairs, where the rail gets held a hundred times a day, and it pairs naturally with wood floors, treads, and decking.
Cable with a Metal Top Rail
On decks and contemporary remodels, all-metal keeps the system quiet and low-maintenance. Keeping the top rail in metal gives the crispest version of a cable railing. The lines stay thin, the finish stays consistent from post to cap, and outdoors there is no wood to reseal. Black is the most common finish we powder-coat, though the color is yours to pick.

Lake Oswego Homeowners Ask
Do you work outside Lake Oswego?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-08-15T16:18:00-07:00We do. West Linn, Dunthorpe, Tualatin, Portland, and the rest of the metro are all core territory, with hillside and view properties a specialty throughout.
Will the cables sag over time?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-08-15T16:17:35-07:00
Not if the posts and tensioning are done properly. The posts have to be built and spaced to carry the load of tensioned cable, which is exactly why we fabricate them rather than using a kit. We tension the runs on site and they can be checked and adjusted later if ever needed.
Can cable replace our dated oak stair railing?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-08-15T16:17:11-07:00Yes, it is one of our most common Lake Oswego projects. The staircase stays where it is. We measure the flight, build the posts and top rail to it, and install cable in place of the old balusters, which changes the feel of the whole main level.
Cable or glass for our Lake Oswego deck?
Custom Railings Oregon2026-08-15T16:16:48-07:00If the deck faces the water, glass usually wins: it holds the view completely and cuts wind. If the deck faces trees or the neighbourhood, cable is often the better buy. It is nearly as open, costs less, has more texture, and never shows water spotting after a wet week.
