About Cable Railings

Cable Railings in Hood River, OR

Hood River decks face two things at once: a Columbia view worth keeping and a wind that arrives most afternoons. Cable answers both differently than glass does. The thin lines keep the outlook, and the wind passes through instead of pushing against a panel.

We design, fabricate, and install cable railings across the Gorge for decks, balconies, outdoor stairs, and interior runs. Posts and top rails are built in our own shop and tensioned on site by our crew.

Hood River is about an hour from the metro and part of our regular schedule, so a Gorge project runs the same process as one across town.

Custom Cable Railings

Gorge properties rarely offer a simple straight run. Decks step down hillsides, cabins have stairs built by hand decades ago, and rental properties need systems that take constant guest traffic without looking tired.

Custom fabrication covers all three: posts set to the structure as built, hardware chosen for the exposure, and cable tensioned to hold its line through a windy season. Some projects need only careful measuring; others need drawings and custom finishes. For owners who live elsewhere, it can start from photos.

What We Build

Interior Cable Railings in Hood River

Inside, cable keeps a river-facing stair or landing from blocking the view that the house was positioned for, and it does it at a friendlier cost than a glass panel.

In the downtown bungalows, cable turns up more selectively, usually on a rear stair or a loft addition where a modern system will not argue with the Craftsman character out front.

Local Experts

From the Heights to the Upper Valley

On the Heights and the Westside, river-facing decks lead the cable work, often chosen over glass specifically so the wind can pass through. Downtown and around Oak Grove, cable appears more selectively, generally indoors.

Up the valley in Odell, Parkdale, and toward Mt. Hood, farmhouses and cabins take cable with wood caps that suit the setting. Across the bridge, White Salmon and Bingen view homes get the same treatment as the Heights.

Local Conditions

Exterior Cable Railings in Hood River

Exterior work is the bulk of it here. On a Columbia-facing deck, cable holds the view open, and on an exposed site it lets the gusts through rather than catching them the way a solid panel does.

The Gorge also brings more sun than the west side of the mountains sees, so stainless cable on a properly finished frame is worth specifying with year-round exposure in mind.

Options

Wood Cap or All Metal in the Gorge

Rentals and exposed decks usually go all metal. Valley farmhouses and interiors often prefer the wood cap.

Cable with a Wood Top Rail

In a valley farmhouse or a cabin, the wood cap suits the materials already there. A wood cap over slim metal posts is the most requested combination we build. It keeps something warm to the hand on a stair, ties the railing to the flooring or decking, and softens what would otherwise be an all-metal system. We fabricate the posts and fit the wood so the joinery comes out clean.

Cable with a Metal Top Rail

On a rental or an exposed Gorge deck, all-metal is the one that keeps looking right unattended. Keeping the top rail in metal gives the crispest version of a cable railing. The lines stay thin, the finish stays consistent from post to cap, and outdoors there is no wood to reseal. Black is the most common finish we powder-coat, though the color is yours to pick.

Hood River Homeowners Ask

Yes. Hood River is about an hour out and part of the regular schedule, along with Mosier, Cascade Locks, and White Salmon across the bridge.

Yes, when the posts are built for it. Tensioned cable puts real load on the posts, so we fabricate them to carry it and space them for the run. We tension on site, and the runs can be checked and adjusted later if ever needed.

Regularly. Rentals and second homes are a good share of our Gorge work. Cable suits them well: guest traffic does not wear it, there is no finish to maintain between turnovers, and if you are not local the project can start from photos.

The answer turns on what you want the wind to do. Glass panels block a good share of it, which can make an afternoon deck usable. Cable lets it pass straight through, which some owners prefer because the deck still feels like it is outdoors. Both keep the view.
